I presented the following poster at the workshop “Wanting What is Needed” at the 18th International Conference on the Simulation of Adaptive Behavior (SAB 2026, October 19–22, 2026, Berlin, Germany).

Keeping One’s Own Rhythm: Homeostatic Needs Shape Synchrony in Active Inference Collectives

This work asks how synchrony emerges in a collective of active inference agents when each agent has a homeostatic need to keep its own rhythm. Each agent runs two sensorimotor loops: an interoceptive loop through which it infers and regulates its own rhythm, and an exteroceptive loop through which it senses phase differences with its neighbours and acts on them. Phase coupling, regulation of one’s own rhythm, niche selection by moving, and slow learning of the rhythm setpoint are all treated as descending a single free energy.
