Tin Mišić of our lab gave the following oral presentation at the 7th International Workshop on Active Inference (IWAI 2026, October 14–16, 2026, Central Auditorium of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Madrid, Spain), whose theme is “Advancing the Foundations of Intelligence.”

Sensory Precision Inference for Multimodal Arbitration under Uncertainty Tin Mišić (Osaka Univ.), Takato Horii (Osaka Univ. / IRCN, The University of Tokyo) October 14, 2026 (Wed), 10:30–11:30 (local time) Contributed Talks, Session 1 “Predictive Coding and Representations” (Chair: Pablo Lanillos)

Real-world sensory streams are often corrupted by noise, missing data, or conflicts between modalities. This work proposes a multimodal active inference model in which latent beliefs and modality-specific sensory precisions are jointly updated through iterative free-energy minimization, so that the agent adaptively arbitrates how much to rely on each sense. A learned prior over sensory precisions further yields structured, class-dependent and interpretable precision patterns. Experiments on a synthetic multimodal MNIST dataset combining visual, auditory, and tactile representations show robust reconstruction under corrupted input, coherent belief formation from partial observations, and stable arbitration between conflicting modalities.
